Grapes: 60% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre

The Domaine de l'Oratoire Saint-Martin covers 25 hectares only in the municipality of Cairanne. Most of the vineyard is located in the northeast of the town, 200 meters above sea level on steep hills in an area commonly called "the mountain" in the localities of Saint-Martin, Les Douyes and Coustias.

It was in 1692 under the aegis of André Alary that the Alary family settled in Cairanne, as evidenced by the municipal archives. Winegrowers on this terroir from father to son, 10 generations have successively passed on the estate, which has been enlarged over time. Each generation inherited the same love of vines and wine, the same concern for good cultivation and perfect vinification.

Manual sorting of the grapes in the vineyard then in the cellar. De-stemming without crushing and vinification for 18 days under racks for a slow and gentle extraction. Indigenous yeasts. Aging lasts about 12 to 15 months in casks depending on the vintage, then bottling is carried out without fining or filtration.

At the origin of this estate is Louis Avon, a journeyman cooper who, during his Tour de France, settled in Vacqueyras where he came to buy some acres of vines. Today, after a transmission from mother to daughter, the domain covers 22 hectares including 2 in Cotes du Rhone, 3 en Gigondas et 17 en VacqueyrasIn the vineyards, the reasoned fight is in the spotlight, which excludes herbicides and pesticides. In the same logic of respect for Nature, the soil is mechanically worked. Concerning the grape variety, Grenache is in the majority, followed by Syrah and a little Mourvèdre. Happy team of pickers share pick the beautiful and good bunches. In the cellar, you will find the same respect, the same attention as in the vineyards, with minimalist interventions and barrel aging.

GIGONDAS LE CLAUX CHATEAU OF SAINT COSME 2019

Very old Grenache planted at a place called “Le Claux”. Whole harvest. Limestone marls from the Miocene, in the Font des Papes alluvial cone. Aged for twelve months: 20% in new barrels - 50% in barrels of one wine - 30% in barrels of two wines. Le Claux is a living testimony to a fundamental part of French wine history: the phylloxera crisis. The vine was replanted in 1870 on a rootstock that has almost disappeared today: the "Gloire de Montpellier". It was one of the very first vines replanted in the Rhone. Producing wines again after such a tragedy must have been "glorious", no doubt... The masculinity of Claux wines is coupled with a complexity that has its sources in the genetic diversity of all these old vine plants. , all different. The depth in the wines of Claux is always amazing, even in the most difficult vintages. In a vintage like 2019, this depth is more like the Mariana Trench than a small pond formed by the storm of August 15. The magic of great vintages is a pleasure, a gift from heaven that all winegrowers of the world share the same way. Because the joy produced by good wine is a human pleasure that is lost in the mists of time. Only the road that goes up to the village of Gigondas separates Claux from Hominis Fides. However, the wines are so different: it is always a good way to understand the meaning of the system of localities imagined by the Cistercian monks in Burgundy. Indeed, before throwing away the ideas of those who preceded us, you have to think, try other ideas many times, then decide by trying to see far ahead. To be a winemaker is to seek and refine all his life the methods that best express the place of origin of his wine. Each place gives rise to a certain "technical path". And if Le Claux was the best wine of Saint Cosme? In light of the last tastings of old wines that we conducted at the estate, it is permissible to ask the question. Certainly, Le Claux is the oldest vine in Saint Cosme and one of the first post-phylloxeric plantations in France, but why does this soil generate so much quality?
That said, the microclimate of Saint Cosme probably has a significant impact on this locality: the fresh air of the valley of the Font des Papes continuously refreshes this area which gives intensely aromatic fruit. The cold influence would tend to be demonstrated by the fact that Le Claux is a later terroir.

Domaine Gramenon, created in 1978, is located in MONTBRISON-SUR-LEZ in Drôme Provençale, at the first foothills of the Pre-Alps, at an altitude of 350 m.
In the northernmost part of the southern Côtes du Rhône.

This small trading activity was created by Maxime-François Laurent in 2006 alongside the estate.
It consists of a partnership with a neighboring winemaker whose vines extend over approximately 6 hectares and are located in the municipalities of Montbrison sur lez and Valréas.

The harvest, destemmed with 100%, is vinified in concrete vats. One to two times a day, a pigeage ensures a good extraction. The temperature varies between 30 and 33 ° C.
Breeding
12 at 14 maturing in oak barrels give this wine woody notes, one of the elements of the bouquet.

The vineyard is planted on 3 very different types of soil:

  • Chassis : represents 80% of the parcels with a clay-limestone soil with many pebbles from the Rhône. the typicality of Crozes-Hermitage.
  • Larnage : is characterized by Loess, white varieties (Marsanne and Roussanne) coexist with Syrah to give white and red wines fond of and fruity.
  • The castle of Larnage : a white earth composed of Kaolin, characteristic of this village, foreshadows a bright future for our plot of Roussanne planted in 2011

The objective of the domain is toexpress the authenticity of the terroirs, this involves different approaches: - A reasoned fight for phytosanitary treatments: contact products such as Sulfur and Copper are preferred

In old French, "Clos" was written "Claux". Just as the first name Côme was written Cosme until the XNUMXth century. You will have noticed that we like the old writing of the words, before the spelling remotivation due to time distorts them a little. A Claux, which has become "Clos" in most French vineyards, was originally written Claus, Clausas, Clausis, Clauzis and designated a closed place, closed, from the Latin Clausum for "closed". A vine can be "enclosed" by a wall, a river, the sea, a lake or a cliff. It is indeed a long cliff that closes our "Claux": this parcel therefore draws its etymological origin from the mists of time. The names of the localities always mean something if we take the trouble to search a bit. I have a particular affection for Claux, our oldest vine, which produces the most “Burgundy” wine of the estate, full of bouquet, finesse and freshness.
